Today is the day to scale the hill that houses the famous Acropolis. All of my art history from college is flooding into my brain as I make my way up the hill, the buildings are peering over the top to watch my ascent. It’s a beautiful thing to open up the pages of history in your mind and step in.
Here I am, scaling the ancient site that was built upon 6000 years ago, walking the same path that people did in the ancient past. Each step brings anticipation and wonder, just as it must have done for many a traveler as they came to pay tribute to the goddess Athena.
The snow white marble glistening in the sun, gives an otherworldly glow. Athena’s statue, made of ivory and gold, towered within the Parthenon with a pool of oil below that reflected and magnified its splendor and size. Athena, the virgin goddess of the hearth and of war, was all powerful, all knowing and was the maker or breaker of peace. A visit to her sacred sanctuary would be a once in a lifetime experience and would create an indelible impression on the seeker of blessing. Not only would one see this beautiful deity, but upon leaving, the Erechthion beyond would be awe inspiring as well. The beautiful maidens with their thick plats of hair held up the temple signifying female strength and abundance.
Leaving the Acropolis, as a woman, I can imagine women of their day feeling empowered. Strong women were portrayed, glorified, honored and exalted. They were looked to as holders of wisdom and I love what strength that awakens in me.
