If you’re one of those lucky people that can eat anything you want with no repercussions, I’m happy for you. I really am. You experience the world in a way I wish I could, but ultimately, I can’t eat anything I want, so I prepare. Many people may think you can’t have an amazing trip if you have to worry about what you’re eating, and to that I say, oh but you can! All it takes it some ingenuity and research. And I’m not suggesting that you have to take lots of time to plan either, but it does take an extra step or two to make sure you have plenty of options. This can be fun, really, even if you’re the kind of person who hates research. Think of it as an adventure that you get to play out. And honestly, these days, all you have to do is google “gluten-free” or “dairy-free” or “vegan” restaurants in XYZ. It’s as easy as that. It will take seconds and up pops a list for wherever you’re traveling. For me, being GF and DF, Sushi, Thai and even Indian food restaurants are great bets. Itsu is a chain in London that sells sushi, salads and thai inspired soups that are cheap, quick and ideal for those of us that want to eat fast and get to our next sightseeing destination. They also have an allergy chart available upon request that details each food item, what allergens are present, who can eat them and who should stay away from them.
There are many more restaurants that have these same options, you just have to do your research. I always google “best Gluten-Free restaurants” and then add them to my Google Maps for the destination I’ll be visiting. This way, wherever I am at any given time during my stay, I can open my Google Maps app and see what’s available to me nearby. You can do this anyway without research, but if you’re anxious about this ahead of time, alleviate those worries by planning ahead.
I also like to keep snacks with me, so if for whatever reason I can’t find a place that meets my dietary restrictions in the immediate vicinity I’m in, I have a back up plan. For me, this would include fruit, granola, nuts or any other easily packable edible. I make it a point of going to a local grocery every time I travel somewhere to stock up on these items so I have them at the ready. It also saves you money if you want to cut down on restaurant spending.
So my friend, it’s super easy! You’d most likely be doing this anyway even if you had no dietary restrictions if you care about great food and comfort while away from home. Remember, with a little preparation, your whole travel experience can run pretty smoothly and you’ll have a great time along the way!
