Mycenae, the 4000 year old Bronze Age city would have been a site to behold in it’s day. With it’s Lion Gate that is still visible upon entry into the great walls and the massive stones that make up it’s fortification, it would have been a difficult city to breach. The city is flanked on two sides by mountains with deep valleys and the ascent at the front is also on an incline. The city is also on a hill with 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside. Those stones by the way were thought by ancient peoples to be placed there by the mighty cyclops that is part of greek mythology. And I walked close to them, it’s easy to understand why those greeks would have believed any type of story of how the walls were built since there was no written history left behind telling them how it was done.
Traveling in Greece and visiting all of these ancient sites steeped in mythological lore reminds me of how poignant our narratives are. How much we explain away to ourselves and perceive the world around us through the lense of stories.
